Belated but sincere sympathy on the enormously annoying being forced to re-do your dissertation proposal. I really think you're right about questioning whether your advisor is doing you any good.

Good to see you mention The Bangles. I liked some of their songs and wished they'd stayed around longer and stronger. Rock has and sometimes realizes a high potential for complex nonlinear information (that is, art), but much of the time I just can't take the noise (in all senses) level. Don't forget to tell me about actual part-singing when you have time.
