1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Climbed to the top of the castillo at Chitzen Itza. It was fantastic.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No resolutions last year. I am making 2 for this coming year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
A dear friend miscarried and it was terribly sad for her, her partner and for all of us who felt connected to them.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, my uncle, just this Saturday and in May my kitty Hobbes died.

5. What countries did you visit?
Mexico.

6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
A long-term full-time job with its most important benefit -- a salary.

7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
October 21, when we began the atkins hell diet (and I have lost some weight).

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Surviving.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not completing the dissertation.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
No.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
I bought a travel backpack that was the greatest thing in Mexico. Then again, I bought a cloth to wipe my sweaty face with in Mexico and thought it was the coolest invention ever. So, best thing is purely situational. I'm certain that TT Extended should be on there, too.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
So many people. Sh passed her quals with glowing colors; Rwr got a new job he's excited about.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
George W. Bush. Donald Rumsfeld. My sister.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Rent and commuting expenses. You gotta love LA.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seeing JC at HoB and going to the Yucatan.

16. What song will always remind you of 2003?
Stuck in a Moment by U2

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Still very sad.
ii. thinner or fatter? A little thinner, thanks for asking!
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer. Gotta love LA.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Exercise. Dissertation writing.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Teaching. I did 6 new class preps in 2003.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With dear friends, having a day off the Atkins regimen.

22. Did you fall in love in 2003?
Many times over, sometimes with people I've fallen in love with before.

23. How many one-night stands?
Not enough.

24. What was your favorite TV program?
Alias. Hands down, no competition.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Yes.

26. What was the best book you read?
"The Eyre Affair" by Jasper Fforde tied with "Years of Rice and Salt" by Kim Stanley Robinson.

27. What was your greatest musical (re)discovery?
b.b. king

28. What did you want and get?
A teaching gig at a UC.

29.What did you want and not get?
A handheld computer.

30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Return of the King.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went to dinner with friends and had chocolate cake and presents. I turned 40 this year.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Completing my dissertation.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
Cotton semi-professional.

34. What kept you sane?
My dear friends ([livejournal.com profile] sherrold, sh, rwr, mona), my terrific colleagues, and so many stories (Lust over Pendle, Tissue of Silver, The Grapefruit Gurus of Southern California, Wolves and Boybands Mate for Life just to name a few treasures of sanity preservation). Oh yeah, and lots of music.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Johnny Depp -- he's so sexy, no matter what he does.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The Los Angeles Grocery Worker Strike.

37. Who did you miss?
Bill Clinton and my grandmother, who is still living but in the throes of Alzheimer's has "lost" her grandchildren.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
I'm not certain who I met in 2003 that I didn't know in 2002. So, I'll give this one a miss.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003:
"All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
