Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] destina and her teacher Sab, I have an avatar.

I have been watching tv tonight and I have to say it is much more fun than writing my diss. Though I do have a very strong embarrassment squick and it got a serious work out tonight. I hate to see people -- real or imagined people -- embarrass themselves in any circumstance. And that is why, while I enjoyed Century City (Ioan, nice accent!), I feel I must watch the next 2 episodes from the kitchen. Because -- my god, someone could have said something spoiler-ish -- I nearly died during the funeral scene. Died. As in, no longer breathing. From embarrassment. And that scene may have set my popslash fannish inclinations back a few years, too. That aside, Century City was pretty intriguing as lawyer dramas go. Leaving aside the embarrassing stuff, of course.

Also, I watched my first Keen Eddie episode tonight. [livejournal.com profile] gwyn_r's vid at Escapade made me curious (it's a great vid, whether you've seen the show or not) and I told Tivo to get the show for me. It's dead cute. Plus, the little british guy is hot and the show is edited in an unusual fashion. The story was amusing and clever. I can't wait for more.

In other news, I was all professional this weekend (Sunday and Monday) at a regional conference and am now rewarding myself with vanilla vodka and diet vanilla pepsi for a conference well attended. I was dressed up, uncomfortable shoes and all, for the entire conference. Sleep hasn't been my friend lately and my dreams have been all about dead family members. I kinda dread sleeping. Hopefully, in the wake of this fit of professionalism, I'll dream of historical theology tonight. Or maybe Captain Blood will appear in my dreams (what a great book! I can't believe I haven't read it before now).

Have you all read The Da Vinci Code? I've been listening to it during my commute and I'm just not certain if it's worth it. I'm on chapter 20-something and it's making me crazy. POssibly the problem is the guy reading it -- his french accent for Sophie is making me crazy. But I also don't love the story telling style. Is it worth the lame tell-not-show prose? Inquiring, intoxicated, post-modern minds want to know.

But why is the vodka gone?

Well there aren't any pop slash inclinations here, but I've got to agree with you, I almost died when the funeral scene appeared. I was roaring with embarrassed laughter, hands over my face and peeking, but gah that was just so incredibly baaaad. Can you imagine. I kept sputtering things about boy bands and I think my Dad thought I was having some kind of seizure of something.

I tried to. Someone gave it to me for Christmas, but after trying to read it for several months, I passed it on to someone else in the family. No success there either. I just think it really poorly crafted. It annoyed me immensely. I had this repeated urge to hurl the book against the wall, which is so not something I'd normally do. It hasn't met with much success elsewhere, either.

No, I can't imagine doing that, even for a paycheck. And it's amazing and so impressive to me that you could peak through your fingers. I was hiding under two pillows and a blanket with my eyes closed and my fingers in my ears, humming, just in case any sound crept in. My partner threatened to watch it again because he thought it was so funny.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one having trouble getting into the Da Vinci Code. I agree it's poorly crafted.

Oh, dear! See, I think of myself as having a huge embarrassment squick, and the funeral scene didn't bother me, so I wouldn't have been of any help.

As for The Da Vinci Code... I read it for a book club, and as an actual book it reads fast enough that I finished, but I don't think I'd bother on audiotape, where I'm stuck at the reader's pace. I'm not a big conspiracy or Illuminate fan, and most of the stuff he "revealed" wasn't particularly new or shocking to me, so. Basically, I don't think it's worth it if you're not enjoying it already, unless you just want to be able to say yeah, I read it. I read it while Mom was in hospital over Xmas, and I swear, more people commented on my reading it enthusiastically than any other book ever. This is why it's sticking on bestseller lists; not because it's really good, but because people keep raving to other people, who then buy it.

Okay, a lot of them seem to be enjoying it, but. Bah.

No embarrassment squick. Whoa. That is so cool.

Okay, a lot of them seem to be enjoying it, but. Bah.

Yeah, I don't get that at all. People really seem to be enjoying it and I think it's predictable (at least so far) and full of mostly wrong stuff about both paganism and Christianity.

*shakes head* Who can understand it?

My MiL gave me The DaVinci Code for Christmas. My general feeling was that I would have been much happier just reading Holy Blood, Holy Grail and The Gnostic Gospels and not having to wade through a fairly boring thriller to get to the info.

I do see what you're saying. I have read both Holy Blood, Holy Grain and The Gnostic Gospels and it seems like he's going a long way for something that isn't that far outside the Christian tradition.

My boss pushed the Da Vinci Code on me, "You're a historian, you'll love this!" Which, of course, set _all_ my alarm bells going. Sure enough... anyway, it was annoying because I kept getting it long before the so-called symbolists did (Read it in the fucking mirror!!!) so nothing was even surprising. Sigh. Read comics---they're much, much better!

You are so right -- it's a very predictable book. I can't believe that his editor didn't harass him about some of the "mysteries" of the code.
I just bought book 5 of the dreaming (A Dream of You).
Miss you!!
