Aug. 18th, 2004 08:34 amMy grandmother, Marjorie, died yesterday afternoon. She was a delightful, beautiful person who inspired and supported me all my life. I owe much of what I am to her love and good humor.
She was a professional model and dancer (for those of you who know what I look like and wonder what happened, I got the body genes from my mom's family). She ran her own business teaching dance and "finishing" to young women and men from the time she was 12. When she was fifteen, she had earned enough to put herself on a train to NYC where she became a dancer in the San Carlo Opera Company. The SCO toured the US and Europe for many years. When she "retired" from the stage at age 37, she again returned to St. Louis where she was a choreographer for the St Louis Municipal Opera. She retired officially at age 75, still taking the occasional master dance student. She was still teaching one or two students well into her 80s. She was amazing.
Her birthday is August 21 and she would have been 93. She had been afflicted by alzheimers for the past 5 years and, in many ways, had been lost to me for the past 2 years. Even so, I am going to miss her laughter and her wit and her insight. I am very sad that's she's gone.
I'm taking off for a few days in St. Louis to be with my remaining uncle and my aunts and my cousins. I'll be back next week.

She sounds like a fabulous woman

Come back safe, and give me a call if you can,
